Phillip Pullman was my favorite author throughout middle school and times before that. He wrote the Dark Materials trilogy, a retelling of Paradise Lost in which the fall of man is portrayed as an emancipation rather than a degradation. Dani rolled her eyes skyward, walking briskly along the forest path. Elliot had been decent enough company when they started the walk, but since he'd gotten, somehow, onto the subject of romance his conversation had turned into an endless drizzle of self-pity. He'd been moping for the last half-hour or so, and Dani now treated his voice as background noise, putting it alongside the wind in the trees, or the occasional sound of a stream. It was obvious he'd given this monologue before, and required her participation just enough to keep it from becoming a soliloquy.
